Last week the RNs representing 12 hospitals in metro Minneapolis went on a one-day strike protesting nurse-to-patient staffing ratios in their hospitals. There were over 12,000 RNs involved. They took a strike vote and passed it with over 90% of their membership voting “yes” on the strike.
Mobilizing that many nurses for one goal had to be something to see. They received tons of media attention – people knew across the United States that the Minnesota RNs had had it and were scared for their patients. It was impressive on any number of levels.
Could we do that here in Michigan? Would we? Could that many of us unify for nurse-to-patient staffing changes?
What would it take?
What would you do?
